The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) is saddened by the death of staff member, Peter Leshie Mabuse, better known at DJ Mashata.
The Pretoria born DJ and comedian was shot and killed on Sunday morning, 21 April by a barrage of bullets in Soshanguve.
In a statement, TUT said support will be offered to the Mabuse family, friends, colleagues and students during this difficult time.
“Mabuse has been a loyal employee of TUT where he served as a Residence Advisor for both Pretoria and Ga-Rankuwa Campuses.
His varied community engagement activities, eg. as MC and as Stadium Announcer at Mamelodi Sundowns home matches, had a positive impact on society beyond the gates of the University.
The university calls upon the public, including the media to exercise restraint and sensitivity towards the family at this time of grief.”

Meanwhile, Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation MEC, Morakane Mosupyoe circumstances surrounding DJ Mashata’s murder are both shocking and heartbreaking.
Mosupyoe said we cannot allow ourselves to become desensitized to the violence that plagues our streets.
“To think that such violence could be inflicted upon someone who dedicated his life to healing and uplifting others is incomprehensible.
It serves as a stark reminder of the harsh realities we face in our communities and the urgent need for action to address the root causes of such violence.
As we mourn the loss of DJ Mashata, we must also reflect on the broader implications of his death. His murder is not just a personal tragedy; it is a wake-up call for all of us. It highlights the urgent need for greater efforts to combat crime, promote safety, and build stronger, more resilient communities.”

DJ Mashata was travelling with a male passenger, and was driving near the TUT campus when an unknown number of gunmen opened fire on their vehicle.
A motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage, and police are said to be investigating.
