Reclaim Summer: Classic makeup tutorial to take you from work to play

Makeup artist Prudence Maseko shows Kaya 959’s Reloaded with Andy Maqondwane why a “Classic Makeup” look should form the basis of every woman’s skillset.

Gearing up for a summer of melanin-popping, glowing skin, Andy made the perfect canvas for Pru to create art on.

The classic makeup look is versatile enough to take you from a day at the office to sundowners, this summer.

A basic look uses just 2 contrasting colours and is a little easier to achieve. The classic makeup look on the other hand is all about accentuating the eyes, brows, lashes and lips.

To achieve Andy’s look you will need the following products:

Primer
Foundation
Concealer
Powder
Brow pencil
Brow brush
Eyeliner
Mascara
Eyeshadow palette
Lipstick in a nude shade
Setting spray
Makeup brushes and beauty blenders
False lashes and lash glue
Highlighter and contour palette

Try out the Classic Makeup look at home

First things first

Pru applied primer to Andy’s face to create a smooth, oil-free canvas.

The primer was applied in light sweeps over the entire face and neck area.

Brows

Pru first shaped and filled Andy’s brows.

Next, she used concealer to outline the brow line. This helps to create a perfectly sculpted brow.

Eyes

Pru used three shades of eyeshadow on Andy’s eyes.

The outer edge of the eyes received a darker shade for a ‘smoky’ effect.

A matte nude was applied to the inner eye area and blended together with the darker shade.

Working in small circular movements, Pru then used a metallic shade of rose gold over the nude to draw attention to the eyes.

Andy was given a subtle wing with eyeliner, working with the shape of the eye as a guide.

Lashes

False lashes were measured and applied using a lash glue.

To accentuate it, mascara was applied.

Foundation

Tip: start with the eye makeup so you don’t ruin your foundation.

Foundation was applied using a beauty blender and foundation brush.

The beauty blender helps spread the foundation evenly on the skin without any traces of streaks.

Concealer

Pru used concealer under Andy’s eyes, the bridge of her nose, the centre of her forehead and center of her chin.

The secret here is to blend using a puffy brush or beauty blender, working in light sweeping movements.

Baking your makeup

‘Baking your makeup’ is when you apply translucent powder to areas of the face that are prone to crease.

Pru ‘baked’ Andy’s face before completing the look by sculpting it with a highlighter and contour palette.

Contour and highlight

Contouring and highlighting are two important techniques to master with makeup.

Where contouring is about creating shadows by using lines to define your cheekbones, highlighting is the opposite.

The contour lines are also blended onto the face working outwards from the area that it is applied to.

Instead of shadows, highlighting is where you add light to areas of the face. Highlighting is done using a dark powder on the areas you want to sculpt.

You will need highlighting and contouring brushes to achieve this.
