Safe and affordable cars for first time buyers

Back in the 1990s in Mamelodi, there was a young man who was a neighbour.
He had a lot going right for him, he got a job as soon as he dropped out of school, thanks to his sister who made sure of it.
Anyway, a couple of years later the young man went and bought his first car, an Opel Astra.
What followed was what I would describe as catastrophic events that put his life in danger.
One Friday afternoon this young man drove from Mamelodi West to East and almost landed underneath a bus near approaching a busy intersection. According to those who witnessed this, he diced with fate.
Another one of his stories is that he was almost hijacked at the local shops but was saved by him knowing one of the tsotsis and so the tsotsi ordered him to go home. This was the last straw for his older brother who intervened and ordered him to sell the car until he was mentally and emotionally ready to own a car.
After much contention, he sold his car.
This is one of those funny but sad stories that I’d never forget. The young man did not get proper guidance before he embarked on this big milestone of his life.
He dived head in without any help. Had he got the necessary guidance he would have made the right decision. He would have considered a few things for a first-time car buyer. He went for a car way bigger and too sophisticated for someone with no driving experience and no street wisdom.
As we all know safety is a big concern for all of us. When it comes to our offspring, we tend to become overprotective. I am talking about the safety of our new graduates starting new jobs and buying their first car. I am talking to all the proud parents holding excited hands at the dealership and saying No to the “cool cars” suggested by the offspring because they don’t care for the safety features, practicality, or functionality of the car and personal safety.
Entry-level cars have evolved since our time, we now get value for our money because manufacturers have upped their game in all aspects. So, there is no need to go for that popular car. There are safer and nicer cars that can be as rewarding as the popular car.
Technology has now advanced in these vehicles and so have the safety features. Here are a few suggestions from different brands in the entry-level segment:
- Toyota Agya – R192 300,00
- Kia Picanto – R198 995,00
- Hyundai Grand i10 – R285 900,00
- Suzuki Swift – R189 900,00
- Peugeot 108 – R164 900,00
The cars listed are all equipped with the necessary safety features such as ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution), and sufficient airbags for the front and rear passengers. I could further make my case by saying these are reliable and reputable brands, with years of providing built-quality, safe, efficient, and affordable vehicles.
Parents, we can even argue our case with affordability and reliability. When doing the research before the purchase, introduce our offspring to car warranties, service plans, and insurance as the guiding factors for them to eventually make the right decision.
