Power of Women Award

Kaya 959 presenter, Brenda Sisane was recently honoured with the Mail & Guardian Power of Women Award in Arts, Film and Media.

The Jazz Standard host was nominated by her peers for her significant contribution to the industry and shared how significant the award is to her.

Sisane says while many people think music is merely a form of entertainment, she understands that there’s more to music than meets the ears.

“Music can be used to share the hard stories no one wants to hear, there’s a powerful messaging and it can make all the difference in driving change in the world.

Whether it be used as a tool for diplomacy, or to explore social issues and unify people from all walks of life, I believe that we can achieve a lot through music.

This award is a nod that it is possible and it’s an important reminder to uplift and make a positive difference.”

Sisane said the award is a significant one to her because it solidifes that the work that goes into The Jazz Standard, from her team on-air to those behind the scenes, is being recognized and it’s an honour she humbly accepts.

Mail & Guardian have been celebrating 30 years of women’s empowerment to signify their progress, resilience and unity in South Africa.

Over the past 18 years, the Mail & Guardian has made a point of profiling the transformative work done by women in leading conversations about their empowerment in its Power of Women annual flagship.
