J Molley on attempting suicide 200 times and fighting to live everyday

South African artist J Molley has spoken out about attempting suicide 200 times, battling suicidal thoughts and fighting to live everyday.

The 24-year old who was a drug addict, made a return to social media in March 2024, after a 7-month break and newfound sobriety.

Since then, J Molley has shared that he has been battling really dark thoughts, and “satanic demons” which were leading him on a destructive path.

While he is in a better place, the Seven Bottles hitmaker says the guilt he feels is unbearable and he fights to live everyday.

Before finding some solace in church and devoting his life to Jesus Christ, J Molley shared that he “died” almost 14 times before he was resuscitated.

After sharing his struggles with his mental health, the young artist has faced backlash with many saying he is “clout chasing”, and “pulling a PR stunt” by playing the suicide card.

“I just want to give you guys some clarity on what’s happened in the last 2-weeks. I see a lot of people are saying that this is some sort of PR stunt, or why am I suddenly happy now.

Firstly, I think it’s utterly vile and ignorant thing to accuse me of doing this for a PR stunt. I have attempted suicide 200 times, I’ve been on the brink (of dying) about 14-times.

Did I ever publicize it before? No. This is the first instance that I publicized it.

I hope we can all strive to be more aware and empathetic to this topic, as it affects countless lives and should be taken as serious as it is.

It is a miracle that I am still here and I will fight everyday to remain here.”

J Molley shared that every time he attempted to take his life he was always in a drunken stupor, unable to comprehend anything except that he wanted to end it all.

The young artist says he has Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and goes from experiencing extreme highs to self-destructive lows within a short timeframe.

People with BPD have extreme mood swings, unstable relationships and trouble controlling their emotions. They have a higher risk of suicide and self-destructive behavior. Talk therapy is the main treatment for BPD.

800 000 people die of suicide every year

Suicide is a leading cause of premature death among young people around the world, with the World Health Organisation (WHO) reporting that an estimated 800 000 people die from suicide every year.

For every person who dies by suicide, about 20 more attempt suicide.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) said there’s an alarming number of people who think about attempting suicide.

“Since January we have received over 41 000 suicide calls where people are feeling completely helpless and hopeless and needing desperate help. One of the biggest causes for suicide in SA and the world is misdiagnosed or untreated depression, so for us it is really important to educate our people about the signs and symptoms of depression and getting help before it is too late.”

In South Africa men are said to be more likely to commit suicide then women.
