South African Reserve Bank is upgrading the country’s coins and banknotes.
The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has announced the first upgrade of bank notes and coins in more than a decade.
SARB, which is the is the central bank of South Africa says new designs and upgraded security measures take advantage of the most recent technology advances to safeguard the integrity of our currency and retain public trust.
In a statement they release they shared how the upgraded coins and banknotes will pay homage to former President Nelson Mandela.
“The upgraded banknotes continue to pay homage to South Africa’s first democratically elected president, Nelson Mandela, with his portrait featured on the front of all five denominations while the Big 5 animals are depicted as a family.
“‘The fourth decimal coin series is based on the theme of deep ecology, which celebrates the interconnectedness of humans and other living organisms as an integral part of the environment.”
