In anticipation of the 2023 Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, The Best T in the City with Tbose had the opportunity to chat with jazz musicians Dr. Nduduzo Makhathini and Linda Sikhakhane. These talented artists gave us a sneak peek into what they have in store for us at the upcoming festival and more.
When discussing the origins of jazz, Dr. Nduduzo Makhathini pointed out that it actually stems from dance music. He believes that the misconceptions surrounding the genre arise from our tendency to confine it. “I have learned to respect composition in that way. As soon as the music is out there, it can take any direction.”
Dr. Makhathini has developed a fondness for house music, which his kids thoroughly enjoy. “It speaks to them,” he said.
Giving us a glimpse into his set for the festival, Dr. Makhathini shared that he will be bringing a unique transatlantic sound, along with a talented drummer from Cuba named Francisco Mela. Additionally, he will be joined by Zwelakhe-Duma Bell le Pere, a South African-American musician.
Linda Sikhakhane expressed his excitement about being a part of this year’s festival. “It has hosted many great musicians. This particular one is exciting because I have never featured in that type of music with Sjava and Big Zulu. The most exciting thing is to get ourselves into that space and hopefully get something from there,” Skhakhane shared.
Dr. Nduduzo Makhathini and Linda Sikhakhane will perform on the Conga stage at this year’s Joy of Jazz on 30 September. Get your tickets here.
