Lynn Forbes, the mother of the late South African music icon AKA (Kiernan Jaryd Forbes), recently opened up about rewatching her son’s memorial service, describing it as an emotional experience.
AKA and his friend and former manager, Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane, were tragically gunned down on 10 February 2023 in Durban. Lynn revealed that she spent six hours rewatching the memorial service, which she described as ‘the most raw, purest outpouring of love and unity’ she has ever witnessed.
“God bless us all, and may Kiernan’s soul be at peace,” she added.
Coincidentally, Lynn rewatched the memorial on the same day AKA’s final album, Mass Country, was released—just 14 days after his untimely death.
Reflecting on the album, Lynn shared, “You had already finished it—every lyric, every beat, every detail chosen by you. You had already announced the release date, excited for the world to hear what you created.”
She emphasised that Mass Country is not a posthumous album but rather AKA’s final masterpiece, exactly as he intended to release it. “Mass Country is not just an album; it is your final gift to South Africa, to the masses of our country, to the world. Wrapped in your vision, sealed with your passion,” she said.
Lynn described the album as a vessel of AKA’s essence, saying, “This album doesn’t just hold music; it holds you. Your voice, your spirit, your energy, your love for your craft, South Africa, and the Megacy.”
She also highlighted the lasting nature of AKA’s legacy, stating, “It is untouched. Unchanged. You built Mass Country yourself. You built your legacy yourself. And nothing—not time, not loss, not even death—can take that away. Your legacy needs nothing added, nothing removed. It stands, unshaken.”
Additionally, Lynn shared that listening to Mass Country brings her peace because it reflects AKA’s life and artistry at the time of its creation. “A true reflection of where you were in your life. All that is left to do is to celebrate you. That I do every day. Forever in my heart,” she expressed.
