The National Health Council has approved the immediate hiring of 1200 doctors, alongside 200 nurses and 250 other healthcare professionals.
This decision, announced by Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, follows a R1.78 billion budget allocation aimed at addressing long-standing staffing issues.
The move comes after widespread public dissatisfaction over healthcare worker shortages. Dr. Motsoaledi emphasised that recruitment will begin shortly, signaling a turning point for the strained public health sector.
Beyond staffing, the Council also approved R1.346 billion for essential hospital supplies, including 25 000 beds, 80 000 mattresses, and 7655 bassinets, addressing critical deficiencies in patient care.
Furthermore, the Council has initiated a review of four outdated human resource policies, including those related to overtime, community service, rural allowances, and remunerative work outside of public service, aiming to modernise and streamline healthcare operations.
