Following the visits of Premier Panyaza Lesufi, the media and some dignitaries to the family of slain R&B DJ Peter Mashata, his mother Rebecca Mabuse made an emotional plea for justice.
Mashata was murdered in the early hours of Sunday morning following a performance in Soshaguve, north-west of Pretoria.
“I want justice to be served,” his mom told the media. “I am looking at the way interviews are done, and my wish is to let it just not be interviews.”
Mabuse acknowledged the Premier’s visit but emphasised that it should not stop there.
“Let it be that justice is served. It might be that they might not find the culprit but let them ask. We can’t run our country with women, children or fathers crying every week over murder.”
Expressing her frustration over gun violence in areas like Mabopane and Soshanguve, she questioned the lack of police visibility in their area.
“The way they were shooting at him, it was like they were slaughtering someone. I want to know how it comes that so many guns are in South Africa like this. Guns are like toys in South Africa. Especially in Mabopane and Soshanguve.
“How come there is not even an officer patrolling? They only come here when there is a crime scene. You’ll never see them running around and protecting, but there is so much crime happening. We are crying to the government, but as a society, we know the culprit. Why can’t we help the police?”
